Obituary William Spencer Smith of Salter Path passed away at his home on February 3, 2018 at the age of 74. Spencer was born in Morehead City on April 4, 1943. Spencer was a loving husband and father. He grew up working at the family store in Salter Path which was a gathering spot for the community. The store had a jukebox and Spencer and his friends loved to dance to the music. His love for dancing would last a lifetime. He was a commercial fisherman for over 25 years. Many of his fellow fishermen fondly remember him driving the tractor for the beach fishing crew. His dream came true when he bought a 40 foot shrimp trawler that he lovingly named the Eunice Louise. In 1987 he and his brother began Smith Fence Works where they installed fences throughout Carteret County. Spencer was always right and known for his stubbornness. Everyone loved his sense of humor. He was always quick with a joke or was telling a tale. He was a pillar in a very small, close community. Everyone knew that if there was ever a need, Spencer would be there to help. Spencer was preceded in death by his parents, Irvin and Eunice Smith of Salter Path. He is survived by his with Rebecca and his three children: Jason Smith and wife Anne of Berthoud, CO; Shannon Cox and husband Wayne of Morehead City, NC; and Louise Davis and husband Chris of Youngsville, NC. Spencer loved his five grandchildren: Christian Cox, Sophie Cox, Lily Smith, Clara Smith and Will Davis. He is also survived by three siblings: June Willis, Patsy Hill and Jeffery Smith and wife Beverly, all of Salter Path. He had six nieces and nephews that loved him dearly, Tammy Franklin, Davy Willis, Allison Smith, Adam Smith, Kristi Waters and Tyler Hill. Spencer also loved his dear friends that were like family, Lew and Sheila Main.
