William Potter, Jr

Obituary William Stanley Potter, Jr., 82, retired insurance executive, died April 19, 2015 in Beaufort, NC. Mr. Potter, whose father and grandfather were Methodist ministers, was born December 23, 1932, in St Joseph, Missouri. Moving to North Carolina in 1935, Mr. Potter lived in Clayton, Beaufort, Raleigh, Henderson, Durham and Rougemont. He lived a number of years in Roanoke Rapids where he owned various properties and an independent casualty Insurance agency prior to retirement in Beaufort. He was an Eagle Scout and a graduate of Duke University, where he sang with the choir, men's glee club, and triple quartet. During the Korean War, he served in the Army on Okinawa and he routinely sang at the Navy Airbase Chapel. He was a member of The Savoy Players of Durham and in numerous productions of the Raleigh Little Theater in Raleigh. After moving to Roanoke Rapids, he acted in and produced of a number of plays for the Roanoke Valley Players in conjunction with the Canal Performing Arts Center. He had a named role and vocal numbers in the first production of the outdoor drama, First For Freedom, in Halifax, NC. Mr. Potter actively sang in community concerts and local choirs up until a few years prior to death. He is survived by his wife, Linda Potter of Beaufort, brother, Frank Grafton Potter and wife Lynne, of Charlotte, son, William Stanley Potter III and wife Carol, and daughter, Martha Cotten Potter, both of Raleigh, two stepdaughters, Joann Inman and husband Shannon and Jessica Wages both of Newport NC, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at Ann Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. David C. Wade officiating.
