William Funk

Obituary William Bruce Funk, 85, of Newport, died Saturday, March 18, 2017, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House, Newport. A Mass of Christian Burial with military honors following will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 21, at St. Egbert Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas R. Davis officiating. The interment will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at Ameriah Garner Cemetery, Newport. He was born December 24, 1931 in Martinsburg, WV to Lucian Cable Funk and Hazel Virginia Johnson Funk. He was a 20 year veteran of the United States Marine Corps, served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars and retired at the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. Mr. Funk was a life member of VFW Post 8986. He was employed by the Washington, DC Metro Special Police and additionally worked security for the PX on Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. He is survived by his wife, Barbara M. Funk; daughters, Beverly Jean Nalls of Michigan, Brenda Louise Ryan and husband Robert of Crestview, FL, Bridget Marie Sauer and husband Carl of Newport, Bernadette Michelle Starnes and husband Steve of Newport, Beth Lynette Collins and husband Timothy of Haymarket, VA, Patricia Eileen King and husband William of Havelock; brother, Gary Funk of Maryland; 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, his sisters, Mary Ellen Atchison and Juanita Hicks, preceded him in death. A Christian Wake Service will be held at Brooks Funeral Home on Monday from 5:00 - 5:30 p.m. The family will receive friends following the wake service from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Crystal Coast Hospice House, P.
