Obituary Walter Stanley Jones, 80, of Newport, died September 10, 2017, at his home. A graveside funeral service, with Military Honors, will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at 11:00 AM at Ameriah-Garner Cemetery, Newport, with Rev. James Gurganus officiating. Mr. Jones was born in Roanoke Rapids, NC on March 18, 1937, to William Walter and Mary Peffer Jones. He served his country in the U. S. Navy, retiring after 20 years as a Chief Hospital Corpsman. He was a master woodworker who proudly shared whatever he made with others. He was a people person, never met a stranger, and was happiest when he was working for others. He was a loving husband, father and friend to all. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Theresa Jones; 2 daughters, Linda Tracy Jones and Laureen Janice Jones, all of Newport; 1 brother, Ronald Jones of Roanoke Rapids, NC. The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. In addition to his parents, Walter is preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Jones and Vernard Jones. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Alzheimers Disease Research Center, Duke Medical Center, 2200 W. Main Street, Suite A-200.
