Virginia Davis Hughes

In Loving Memory of Virginia Davis Hughes Virginia Davis Hughes, beloved sister, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend passed away peacefully on August 27, 2024. She was 98 years old.

Virginia was born in Davis, North Carolina on October 12, 1925 to Irvin and Lena Davis and was one of seven children. She grew up with a devotion to God and her family and was of the highest moral and ethical character.

In 1945, she married Walter J. Hughes who was the commanding officer of the Davis radar station. They met at the first Citizens Bank in Beaufort where she was a teller. For the next 65 years, Dad would say “she cashed my paycheck and she has been cashing them ever since.”

After the War, they were married in Deal, Maryland and moved to Walter’s hometown of New York City. Virginia was welcomed by Dad’s large Irish Catholic family where she soon became a star. They were blessed with three children, Wayne, Robert, and James. Virginia’s new family was the center of her world, and she took extraordinary pride in nurturing and supporting each member of her family and her extended family. 

In 1982, Walter and Virginia retired to Morehead City. They became members of the St. Egbert’s Catholic Church where Mom became a member of the lady’s auxiliary and Dad a member of the School Board. Mom also volunteered at the Carteret Hospital where she rose to be head of volunteer services. Virginia was known for her warmth, generosity, and unwavering faith. When asked as to the secret to her longevity she would always reply, “Coffee, Collard Greens and Sweet Potatoes.” Her kindness and compassion knew no bounds.

Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we take comfort in knowing that Virginia’s legacy of love, compassion and kindness will live on in the hearts of all that knew her. May she rest in eternal peace, with Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at St Egbert Catholic Church in Morehead City.

The Family will receive friends on the evening of Tuesday, September 24, at 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Noe-Brooks Funeral Home in Morehead City.
