Obituary Troy Preston Yates, 50, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away on January 15th, 2016 in his home. Troy was born to Kathryn (Yates) Pherigo and William Yates in Rockford, IL on March 2rd, 1965. He graduated from Pecatonica High School in 1983. He also received a Bachelors degree from Southern Illinois University while in the Marine Corps. Troy enlisted in the United States Marine Corp after high school and served for 20 years retiring in 2005 as a Gunnery Sargent. He was stationed at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina and served in both Gulf Wars. He was an Aircraft Systems Technician working on AV-8B Harriers. In his spare time he enjoyed painting ocean scenes, woodworking, motorcycling and cats. Troy is survived by his mother, Kathryn (Douglas) Pherigo, sister, Rita LoTurco, nephew, Ashley Pherigo, niece, Leah Yates, cousins, Joan Lender, Juanita Champlin and Jeanne Lundquist, Troy is preceded in death by father, William Yates and aunts Barbara Champlin and Shirley Rose. The funeral service was held at 2:00pm on May 17th, 2016 at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Machesney Park, IL. Pastor Sylvia Staley of Northeast Christian Church officiated at the grave side service. Funeral arrangements were handled by Sunset Memorial Gardens and Brooks Funeral Home & Crematory, Morehead City, North Carolina.
