"Sonny" C. G. Hyman

March 1, 1951 — April 16, 2014

Obituary The world lost a wonderful man, Sonny C. G. Hyman, 63, of Morehead City, on April 16, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving sisters and family. A Christian memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, at St. Egbert Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas R. Davis officiating. Born in Dunn, NC, Sonny moved to Morehead City in 1955, saying he never found a better place to live, so he stayed put. He earned a BA in Physical Education from East Carolina University. He worked with his father in the family business, Auto Supply Company, which he managed after his fathers retirement. Using his PE degree, Sonny established a fitness program and a track club at his former school, St. Egbert Elementary, where he taught fitness during his lunch hour and coached the after-school track club. In 2013, the school celebrated his 40 years of volunteer service. Sonnys love of running began at West Carteret High School. He set the schools one-mile record with a time of 4:32. He was inducted into the WCHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. He was important in the Carteret County running community and, along with his wife Taylor, helped to establish several local road races, including the Historic Beaufort, Twin Bridges, Lookout, and the Carteret County Beach Run Series. Sonny competed in most of those races, often winning his age division. A serious distance runner, Sonny ran 20 marathons, including the Boston Marathon twice. Sonny was an avid athlete, hunter, and water sportsman, but he placed his family and the people of his community above all else. He was respected and loved by many and he received awards and honors for his outstanding volunteerism, including The North Carolina State Governors Award: Order of the Long Leaf Pine, NC Volunteer Award for Carteret County, and the Mayors Key to Morehead City. Sonny also carried the 1996 Olympic Torch in Raleigh. Sonny is preceded in death by his parents, T.C. and Madelon Hyman; his wife, Taylor; and his sister, Julie Stakes. He is survived by his daughter Kelley Hyman Burton (Thomas), his son Jon Michael Hyman (Lindsey), his grandchildren Hugh and Julia Burton, and Beau Hyman, and his siblings Frances Hyman Richardson (Bill), Maryann Vickie Parker (Ron), Cecelia Kolkin (Jon), Mark Hyman (Cheryl Flax), Christina Logan (Steve), and brother-in-law Gary Stakes. The family would like to express its appreciation, with love, to Sonnys caregivers: Christine Martin, Sheila Williams, Eileen Trofa, Andy Hanning, and Amber McCoy. Due to their care, Sonny was able to live out his life at home.
