Obituary Biography Smith John Pepper Mettrey, 12, of Morehead City died Saturday, April 21, 2018 at the Crystal Coast Hospice House, Newport. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 26, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. John B. Pollock officiating. Smith was born July 14, 2005 in Morehead City, NC. He attended St. Egbert Catholic School, Morehead City Primary School and Morehead Elementary School. Smith was baptized by Father John Pollock at a bedside service on April 16, 2018. Witnesses were Eva Mettrey, Anthony Mendoza and Tina Coffelt Hill. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Jan F. Aquirre and Teresa Conner. Smith had a tremendous personality and was as charmer of all. He fancied himself as a joke teller, magician and musician. His favorite joke to tell wasThere were two muffins in the oven, one muffin says to the other, "Man, its hot in here", the other muffin replies, "Oh my, a talking muffin". His favorite song was Louis Armstrongs "What a Wonderful World". He is survived by his mother, Eva Josephine Mettrey of Morehead City; father, Anthony Lewis Mendoza and fianc Tina Coffelt Hill of Morehead City; twin sister, Tolar Farris Mettrey; maternal grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Gary A. Sod of Louisiana; paternal grandfather, Simforoso "Spider" Mendoza of Morehead City; and an extended loving family in Raleigh, NC, Lexington, SC and Morehead City, NC. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5:00 7:00 p.m. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, John Michael Mettrey, formerly of Raleigh, NC. The ongoing kindness and support by so many has been heartfelt and a testament that humanity is flourishing. A special thanks to Smiths doctors and staff and Duke University Childrens Hospital, Crystal Coast Hospice House, Amie and Steve Huber, Chrissy and Scott Brooks, Smiths educators, Rachel Schwiezer, Jan and Connie Aquirre, Teresa Conner, Tamara Shatterly, Dawn Newsome, the PTO moms, National Charity League and the friends and family who were of great support to us in Smiths Final Week. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center, DUMC 3624, Durham, NC 27710; Crystal Coast Hospice House, 100 Big Rock Weigh, Newport, NC 28570 or Morehead City Middle School Shoe Drive, 400 Barbour Road, Morehead City, NC 28557 (Gently worn or new shoes can be dropped off at Morehead City Middle School until the end of May 2018).
