Obituary Sara Tulloch Ballew, 82, of Morehead City, NC, died Thursday, November 13, 2014, at Crystal Coast Hospice House, Newport, NC. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, November 16, at First United Methodist Church, Morehead City, NC, with the pastor, the Rev. E. Powell Osteen, Jr., officiating and the associate pastor, the Rev. Joseph Franklin, assisting. Mrs. Ballew was born February 9, 1932 in Winston-Salem, NC to Earl Franklin Tulloch and Treva Sprinkle Tulloch. Mrs. Ballew was a graduate of Salem Academy, Winston Salem and attended Hollins College, Roanoke, VA, and Salem College, Winston Salem. She was married to Winslow G. Ballew, Jr., on June 7, 1952, in the home of her parents, in Winston Salem. Mr. and Mrs. Ballew located to Marion, NC and lived there from 1952 until 1991. In 1991, they relocated to Morehead City, NC. Mrs. Ballew was a devoted and loving mother and wife. She was an accomplished cook and a master in the crafts of needlepoint, smocking, cross-stitch and dressmaking. She taught needlepoint at McDowell Technical Community College in Marion. She was one of only a few people in NC commissioned by the Governors office to needlepoint a dining room seat for the Governors Mansion. She returned to college after her children were grown, and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked for McDowell Family Medicine for 10 years as LPN. Mrs. Ballew was a Red Cross volunteer for more than 20 years. She served on the McDowell Technical Community College Board of Directors, for several years. While in Marion, Mrs. Ballew was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marion. After relocating to Morehead City, she became a member of the First United Methodist Church of Morehead City, where she was a member of the hand bell choir. Mrs. Ballew loved to travel, especially to the islands of the Caribbean. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Winslow G. Ballew, Jr. of the home; daughter, Elizabeth Tulloch Ballew of Morehead City; son, Winslow G. Ballew, III of Charlottesville, VA; a brother, Dr. Earl F. Tulloch, Jr. and his wife, Marguerite, of Winston-Salem, NC; grandchildren, Anna Kathleen Raymer of Auburn, AL, Caleb Winslow Ballew of Huntsville, AL, Olivia Hamill Ballew of Bloomington, IN, Elias Taylor Ballew of Raleigh, NC; great-grandson, David Winslow Raymer.
