Obituary Family visitation will be Friday, February 9, 2018 from 5:00 pm until 7pm at Brooks Funeral Home, 201 Professional Circle, Morehead City. Funeral Service will be Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 12:00 pm at Harker's Island Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial to follow in Ocean View Cemetery in Beaufort. Roy Clifford Lewis Sr, 94 years old, was born on the 23rd of July in 1923.to Robert Edward and Tempie Lewis. Roy was one of eight children. He had been married to Sibyl Hunnings 69 1/2 years at the time of her passing the 11th of July in 2012. He was a deacon for 20 years at Harker's Island Pentecostal Holiness Church He and Sibyl visited the nursing homes, hospitals and shut-ins for over 30 years. Due to lack of work locally, he joined the Coast Guard where he ran convoy duty across the Atlantic in WWII. After a hitch he got out and got his U.S. Merchant Marine papers and was on the then brand new Army Corps of Engineer's hopper dredge Goethals. About 50 years later, his son, Roy, then a U.S. Coast Guard Marine Engineering inspector inspected the Goethals in Tampa for re-certification. He re-joined the Coast Guard after a brief time in the U.S. Merchant Marine. He was honorably discharged into retirement after serving 20 years in the U.S. Coast Guard on 11 vessels and one base in Puerto Rico. Shortly after retirement, he owned and operated a successful fishing party boat in Morehead City and a successful shrimp boat operating from Harkers Island. While running the fishing party boat, ferrying personnel to the Marjorie McAllister, he retrieved the compass and navigator's balls from the tug's wheelhouse. He later presented these to the captain's daughter. He built the shrimp boat, from an old pleasure boat hull, himself, net winches and all and used an old diesel from a city bus for power. He went on to obtain a pilot's license at the age of 71. He owned a small two seat airplane. He would give folks a ride but, just before take off, because of his age, he would jokingly ask them to remember where the airport was because his memory wasn't what it used to be. Dad had a very special gift of inner expression through poetry and left us many poems giving insight to his soul. Not many know that. He is survived by his son, Roy Lewis Jr. and his wife Phyllis, daughter Cheryl Braswell and her husband Rick. Grand Daughters, Laura Hendricks, Jeanne Young, Jessica DeBeradinis and Ellie DeLuca, grandson Matthew Lewis. Great Grand Children: Shayn Lewis, Cory Godsy, Joshua Godsy and Khloe AnnMarie Lewis. Great Great Grandsons Tony and Noah Godsy, Kaden and Connor Rice. In addition to his wife; he was preceded in death by his father Robert Edward Lewis Sr, his mother Tempie Lewis, brothers Robert Lewis Jr., Edward Ellis Lewis and Eddie Wayne Lewis; sisters Jane, Gloria Pake, Violet Bell, and Sharon Manning The family extends their sincere gratitude and thanks for all of your prayers, support and love.
