Obituary Ronald I. Gohr, age 82, passed away in his Atlantic Beach home in the early hours of June 30th, 2016, after a courageous battle with cancer, with his daughter and grandson at his bedside. A memorial service will be at Brooks Funeral Home on Saturday, July 9, 2016, at 11:00 am. Military honors and Masonic rites will follow the service. "Ron", as he was known by his family and friends, was born in Cheektowaga, NY in 1934 to the late Joseph Gohr and Vivian H. Gohr. Ron was raised in the Buffalo suburb of Depew, NY and attended Depew High School before eventually joining the United State Marine Corp. He served our great Nation proudly for many years and quickly rose through the ranks to become Master Gunnery Sergeant United States Marine Corps, the title he would eventually retire with. His service and dedication to his fellow comrades did not stop there. Throughout his retirement Ron continued his selfless acts by volunteering his time to being a shuttle driver for Disabled American Veterans. Ron was passionate about cultivating friendships, morality, and brotherly love with members of his community. With these ideas in mind he joined several organizations and was an eager participant. He became a member of the Morehead City-Beaufort Elks Lodge #1710. His drive and determination to excel at whatever he engaged in assisted him in becoming the Exalted Lodge Ruler from 1992-1994, an accomplishment that has never been done by any other member for two consecutive years. He also served as Vice President (East District) from 1995-1996 and District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler for the North Carolina State Elks Association Inc. He was also a Member of the Ocean Lodge #405 A.F. & A.M. He was a member of The American Legion Morehead City Post #46, District #6 Division #2, Department of North Carolina (VFW). He devoted service to hospitalized Veterans as a volunteer representing the Veterans of Foreign Wars in the Department of foreign Affairs Voluntary program. In his spare time, Ron enjoyed fishing, NASCAR, sports (football, basketball and baseball) collecting rare coins, hanging out at the Tackle Box Tavern, spending time with his friends and serving his community any way he could. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Rae, 2 grandsons, Stirling Eastman and Shane Eastman, all of Seattle, WA, and 2 sisters, Shirley Ann Ellis and Janice Adell Sych, both of Buffalo, NY and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 until 11:00 on Saturday, July 9, 2016. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Home Care and Hospice, 662 West Corbett Street, Swansboro, NC 28584, or to the charity of ones choice.
