Obituary Roland Bruce Hawkins, 73, of Newport, died Saturday, May 7, 2016, at Carteret Health Care. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Cherry Point Baptist Church, with the Pastor, Rev. Stephen Epperson, officiating, assisted by Dr. Don Hadley. Mr. Hawkins was born on September 25, 1942 in South Valparaiso, Indiana to Roland Oliver and Martha Cooper Hawkins. He proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps, and was with Civil Service for 36 years. He volunteered with the American Red Cross for over 25 years and the MCCS for 16 years as a water instructor and special events coordinator. From early childhood, he was an avid archer, and participated and won many competitive events. He is survived by his wife, Theresa Dorn Hawkins, of the home; daughters, Donna Hawkins Gooding, of Morehead City, Barbara Hawkins Guthrie, of Greenville, Melissa Kennedy Bezil of Gill, Mass; sons, Matthew Kennedy and Jason Kennedy, both of Granby, Mass, and Mitchell Kennedy of DeLand, FL; sister, Nancy Hawkins Duell and brother John J. Hawkins; and 15 grand children. In addition to his parents, his sister, Jean Hawkins Elkins preceded him in death. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM Saturday until service time at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made in Rolands name to Carteret County Humane Society, 853 Hibbs Road, Newport, NC 28570.
