He was a devoted husband, a proud veteran, and a cherished member of his community. Born on May 14, 1934, to Lee and Ludie Gillikin in Carteret County, North Carolina, Rodney's life was a testament to love, dedication, and service. His family was at the heart of Rodney's life, as demonstrated by his enduring 66-year marriage to his beloved wife Hilda. Their unwavering bond serves as a poignant example of true and lasting love. Rodney found immense joy and meaning in his role as a husband to the love of his life. Rodney's family grew as he became the loving father to his daughter, Cindy. While she precedes him in death, their reunion brings solace to their loved ones. Rodney's sister, Gracie Hinz (Ted), holds a special place in his family's heart, along with numerous nieces and nephews who cherished their 'Uncle Rodney.' A veteran of the United States Marines, Rodney's commitment to service extended into his professional life. Rodney nurtured his fascination with automobiles and even fancied himself to be an amateur weatherman. Hailing from North Carolina, Rodney was an avid supporter of his home state's college sports teams, and his spirit was uplifted by their victories. His unwavering faith found a home at Grace Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a parishioner for over half a century. His service extended beyond the pews, as he volunteered selflessly, ushering, maintaining the church, and lending his voice to the choir. He was proud to be a lifetime faithful servant of God. Anything that he could do to further his connection to God as well as selflessly support his faith community.
