Obituary Robert Stephen Schaefer, 82, of Emerald Isle, died Thursday, January 26, 2017 at CarolinaEast Medical Center, New Bern, NC. A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Brooks Funeral Home with Fr. Jon Emanuelson of the Greek Orthodox Church of Wilmington presiding. Robert was born March 21, 1934 in Fox Lake, Illinois to Stephen Joseph and Regina May Schaefer. In high school, he was named State Champion Plumbing Apprentice Student. He graduated from the University of Illinois and was a Bronze Tablet honoree. As a Seabee in U.S. Navy, Robert served his country during the Korean War and was stationed on Midway Island. He was Chief Engineer at Owens Corning Fiberglas, and retired in 1989. He is survived by his wife, Rena Moustaris Schaefer; son, Stephen R. Schaefer (Nancy) of Carlsbad, CA; son, Philip J. Makes (Kelly) of New York, NY; daughter, Kathleen S. Prephan (Scott) of Perrysburg, OH; daughter, Jennifer L. Schaefer of Oakwood, OH; son, Anthony J. Makes (Ilse Knecht) of Brooklyn, NY; daughter, Elizabeth S. DeRemer (Randy) of Fort Wayne, IN; and 11 grandchildren, Jeffrey Schaefer, Christopher Schaefer, Joshua Prephan, Andrew Prephan, Zachary Prephan, Taylor Chipman, Braden Chipman, Haley Chipman, Johnny Makes, Courtney DeRemer, and Kayla DeRemer. He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Jack Schaefer, and granddaughter Kinsey Chipman.
