Robert Dale Montgomery

Obituary Robert (Bob) Montgomery, 86, of Pine Knoll Shores, NC passed away on Wednesday, November 10, 2021. Robert was born on December 8, 1934 to Ruth and Earl Montgomery in Shidler, Oklahoma. Bob was raised on an Osage Indian Reservation where he played cowboys and Indians with real Native Americans as a child. His extended family lived close by, and he enjoyed hunting with his dog Blue, his dad, and his uncles. When Bob was growing up, he helped his father, Earl with his businesses which included a coal house, an ice house, a movie theater, two gas stations, and part ownership in the town bank. Earl watched Pretty Boy Floyd rob that bank from his filling station across the street. At age nine, the family moved to Louisiana, so Earl could weld landing craft for World War II. Then Earl was needed in Kansas City to weld at a defense plant. Kansas City is where Bob met the love of his life, Carol Lemmon. They began dating at age 15 and 17 and have been together 70 years. They met working at a shoe store, and they attended Wyandotte High School together. After high school, Bob attended Kansas City Junior College. He thought of pursuing a career in politics, but he was too young to run for office. He joined the Marines with a friend and headed out to boot camp. Carol and Bob married on March 25, 1955. Immediately after eating a piece of wedding cake, they hit icy roads and headed for Cherry Point, NC, so he could report to duty. When he reported for duty, he was told he was to be the radar intercept officer (RIO) for Senator John Glenn. Bob flew with the future astronaut for 18 months. After serving in the Marine Corps, Bob and Carol moved to Ohio where Bob served in the Air Guard. In Maumee, Ohio, Bob and Carol became parents of two girls, Pam and Kim. Following his military service, Bob owned several businesses. He had a convenience store, an Arnold Palmer driving range, built golf clubs and flew charters. Bob was tired of Ohio weather and while on vacation in North Carolina, he filled out an application to work at the base at Cherry Point on aircraft. He was hired. He sold his businesses in Ohio and moved to NC. Bob worked at the Naval Aviation Depot and traveled the world as the customer liaison. He traveled to 28 different countries. During this time he became an active member of Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church. In 2001, he retired and spent time on the beach with his grandchildren, went on several cruises and played golf. He scored nine hole-in-ones in his lifetime. He also became an active community volunteer serving at Marthas Mission, church, and the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. In 2012, the great grandchildren began their arrivals. Bob leaves his wife Carol Montgomery of Pine Knoll Shores, daughter Pam and her husband Bob Johns, daughter Kim and her husband Malcolm Condie, grandchildren Rob Condie, Shelley Condie, Tim Condie, Jenny Johns, Christy Penman, Andrew Penman, and Juniper Johns. Also, he leaves his beloved great grandchildren Jackson Condie, Weston Condie, and Ransom Penman. He will be greatly missed but currently resides in a heavenly city where there is no pain or suffering.
