June 21, 1950 — July 7, 2023

Obituary Randolph Allison (Randy) Tyner, 73, of Peletier (Carteret County), NC, left his earthly home and went to join family and friends with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Friday July 7, 2023. A visitation will be held at Noe-Brooks Funeral Home, Morehead City, from 10:15-11AM on Saturday, July 29, 2023. Followed by a memorial service. Randy was born in Lumberton, NC on June 21, 1950, to the late Dan Hector Tyner and Iris Lee Stone Tyner. He and his three brothers grew up in Lumberton and St. Pauls. Randy dearly loved and served his Lord, family, the United States, the state of North Carolina, the Marine Corps, and friends. He was very, very proud of Diane, his three children and his five grandchildren. As a child, he enjoyed doing his chores and continued working full-time and part-time for over 60 years. At "All Occasion greeting cards" door to door. He earned a camera in 1959 which led to his interest in photography. Randy also sold "Grit" newspapers, and "salves" door to door. In 1960, his parents purchased a home across the street from the First Baptist Church of St. Pauls, and this led to his love for Jesus Christ. Randy enjoyed collecting various things beginning in 1957 with baseball cards and U.S. coins. He continued collecting coins all his life and added in old books, National Geographic magazines, and Carolina basketball literature and memorabilia starting in high school. He was proudest of his coin collection and the National Geographic magazines dating from the early 1900s to present. Randys dad operated a "paint and body shop" at Hall Motor Company in St. Pauls and he and his brothers helped their dad while in high school. Randy started a small neighborhood lawn mowing service while in junior high school and continued mowing his lawn until April 24, 2023. In addition to his aforementioned hobbies, Randy started playing golf at age 14 and was on his high school golf team. He loved the New York Yankees and the Washington Redskins early in his childhood and followed them closely through his high school years. After graduation from St. Pauls High School in 1968, he attended East Carolina University for two years before joining the U.S. Marine Corps in 1970. He enlisted to serve his country and to earn the GI bill education benefit. Although he served during the Vietnam war, he was never deployed there. After his two-year enlistment, he returned to ECU and received his bachelors degree in February 1974. In September of that year, he was awarded a graduate assistantship in the Department of Geography at ECU, majoring in the Economic Geography. For personal reasons, he dropped out in early 1975 and moved to St Petersburg, Florida. After nine months there, he decided to return to ECU and obtain his teaching credentials. In September 1976 Randy began his career in education in Hyde County where he also met Diane. Throughout his service in education, he had taught students in grades 4-12 Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Science, Health and Physical Education. In 1981, he received his M.A. in Education (Educational Administration) from ECU. He served in three county school systems and in a Christian academy he helped establish in 1995. Randy also, served as an assistant principal, headmaster of the academy, and instructional Supervisor/Assistant Superintendent of Hyde County Schools. Randy taught students in a residential psychiatric facility in Fayetteville, severely and profoundly handicapped students in New Bern, and developmentally challenged students in Newport. He also, served as a reading tutor and a mentor to wayward youth. Randy served the Lord throughout his life in many ways, but mostly by following the "Golden Rule," sharing and being a cast member, "Thomas the disciple," in the Passion play, "Worthy is the Lamb" for eight years. In his youth he was a quiet person but after serving in the Marines and attending college he "blossomed" just as the vegetables and flowers in his gardens did over the many years. If you were lucky to know him later in his life, you would know he "never met a stranger." He would always ask men he met, "where are you from originally, and what year were you born?" Randy always told them, "Im a 1950 model." Randy is survived by his sons, Chris (Katie), and Mark; daughter, Mary E. Ellis (Michael); five grandchildren, Charlotte and Genevieve Tyner, Everett (Rett), Marlowe, and Ty Ellis; brother, Kenny Tyner (Judy); ten nephews and nieces; many cousins; companion, cousin, friend, helper and sister in Christ, Carmel T. Chavis; and his beloved and faithful dachshund, Studley. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by infant brother and sister, Danny Jr. and Debra Lynn, and beloved brothers Greg and Jeff.
