Obituary R. Hunter Chadwick, Jr., 76, of Beaufort, died Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at Carteret Health Care, Morehead City, NC. A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, June 15, 2019 at St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Beaufort, NC with the Rev. Tammy Lee officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Chadwick (Hunter) was born in Carteret County, NC to Richard H. "Itney" Chadwick and Maude Bloodgood Chadwick. An Eagle Scout in childhood, Hunter attended high school in Fayetteville and Raleigh, was a graduate of East Carolina University, and also attended Northwestern Mortgage Banking School. While at ECU Hunter was President of his fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha and served on the Deans Advisory Board. Hunter worked for Cameron-Brown Mortgage Company as manager in Rocky Mount and Raleigh, finally settling in Fayetteville, NC, where he teamed up with long-time real estate development partner, Homer Barrett, forming Barrett & Chadwick Developers. This entity specialized in home building, land development, and general contracting. Barrett & Chadwick was instrumental in Cumberland Countys expansion as its population grew westward, having conceptualized and developed such neighborhoods as Montclair, Devonwood, and Huntington Park, as well as multiple water companies. Further, in Fayetteville, NC Hunter served as the Chairman of the City Planning Board in addition to being President of the Homebuilders Association. Having family roots and a life-long interest in the Crystal Coast, Hunter moved full-time to Beaufort, NC in 1991. While in Beaufort, Hunter served as Mayor for four years, boasting achievements as extending water service down Highway 101 to develop an industrial park, which is very successful today, helping to start the Boys & Girls Club, in addition to changing the towns administrative style to a manager form of government. Hunter was also appointed Chairman of the Morehead City Navigation and Pilotage Commission and served on the Economic Development Council. For civic work, he was involved with the Beaufort Historical Foundation. Being very devout in his Christian faith, Hunter served on the Vestry of St. Pauls Episcopal Church and was a member of the Endowment Committee. He is survived by his wife Brenda Bowen Chadwick of Beaufort; one daughter Laura Chadwick Sicklin and husband Paul of Beaufort; one son, Richard Hunter Chadwick, III and wife Teresa of Beaufort; a cousin Sterling Heller of Texas, one nephew Bradford Quick Chadwick and wife Kathryn of Huntersville; and a sister-in-law Gwynne Chadwick of High Point. The family will receive friends at the home on Friday June 14, 2019 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. In addition to his parents, his brother Bruce Chadwick and nephew Martin Chadwick preceded him in death.
