Prentiss Wayne Scott, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2024, at the age of 85 in Morehead City, North Carolina. Born on November 28, 1938, in Wentworth, NC, Prentiss lived a full life marked by devotion to his family, service to his country, and engagement with his community.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at First Methodist Church of Morehead City with Reverend Patrick Whaley officiating. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park in Newport. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday at Noe-Brooks Funeral Home of Morehead City.
Prentiss was the loving husband of Suzanne R. Scott, with whom he shared 39 years of marriage filled with joy, laughter, and mutual respect. Their partnership set a great example of a loving marriage. He was a guiding light for his two daughters, Pamela Watson and her husband, Randy, of Hubert, and Christie Burris and her husband, Craig, of Raleigh. Prentiss took great pride in his role as a grandfather to his five grandsons, Ryan Watson and his wife, Jordan, of Beulaville; Reece Watson and his wife, Cheyenne, of Pink Hill; Mason Burris of Asheville; Ben Burris of Chapel Hill; and Luke Burris of Raleigh. He was also blessed to know and love his great-grandson, Gavin Watson of Beulaville.
Before he was a family man, Prentiss honorably served his country in the United States Air Force, a period of his life that instilled in him a sense of order and pride that he carried with him throughout his life. He was stationed in Alaska when it became a state and loved to tell that story. After his military service, Prentiss returned to his North Carolina roots.
An avid golfer, Prentiss was a familiar face at the Morehead City Country Club, where his friendly (and sometimes mischievous) demeanor, positive attitude, and competitive spirit were well-known. His love for sports extended beyond the greens; he found joy and purpose in helping to coach little league baseball, imparting not only the skills of the game but also the values of teamwork and perseverance to young players.
Prentiss retired from a fulfilling career at Wickes Lumber Company of Morehead City, where he left a lasting impression on his colleagues and clients alike. After retirement, Prentiss and Suzanne embarked on many travels together with friends and family. Some of the most memorable trips included Switzerland, a road trip out west to visit his sisters, and most recently a cruise to Alaska to come full circle where his adult life began.
Those who knew Prentiss best would use two words to describe him: witty and loving. His quick wit was as much a part of him as his other five senses. He was still telling jokes and trying to get a laugh until the very end. And he was a person whose capacity for love was great. His wife was the love of his life and he told her that on a daily basis. His joyful nature could light up a room. His unwavering support for his loved ones and his capacity for kindness that extended to friends and strangers alike was a testament to the fact that he was a man who lived his values and made the world a better place by simply being in it.
He was also a dedicated member of the First Methodist Church of Morehead City.
Prentiss was preceded in death by his parents, Forest and Blanche Scott; his brother, Samuel Scott; and his twin sisters, June and Judy. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, but they take comfort in knowing that his legacy of love, service, and community will live on through the lives of those he touched.
As we say farewell to Prentiss Wayne Scott, we celebrate the life of a man who was the embodiment of love in action. His memory will be cherished, and his spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. Prentiss's life was a testament to the beauty of a life well-lived, and while he will be deeply missed, the memories he created will be treasured forever.
