Obituary Paul Karl Heim, 94, of Pine Knoll Shores died Tuesday, February 28, 2017, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House, Newport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 4, at St. Egbert Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas R. Davis and Monsignor Francis Moeslein concelebrating. Military honors will follow in the church yard and inurnment in the columbarium. He was born in Jamaica, NY and grew up in nearby Hicksville where he graduated from Hicksville High School and was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Following high school he attended Polytechnic Institute for one year prior to receiving a reserve commission through the United States Naval Academy in 1942. During World War II he saw action in the Pacific and Atlantic Theatres. After the war, he enrolled at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he earned a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering and later earned a Masters Degree in Industrial Management from Polytechnic Institute in Farmingdale, LI, NY. He was employed by Grumman Aerospace on Long Island where he worked on the design of the A-6E Intruder and F-14 Tomcat aircraft. He was a founding member of Grumman Retiree Club for eastern North Carolina. Mr. Heim was a member of the United States Naval Reserve for 20 years, Fort Macon Sail & Power Squadron, St. Egbert Catholic Church where he was also a member of the St. Egbert Mens Club and the Holy Mackerel Fishing Club. He volunteered with the Pine Knoll Shores Rescue Squad for eight years and made deliveries for Meals on Wheels. He had an exceptional zest for life. He loved his wife, his children, and grandchildren with all his heart and soul. He loved sailing, boating and just being on the water, and he loved a nice cold beer and an "occasional" glass of red wine!!! Left to cherish his memory and long life are his loving wife of 58 years, Mary P. Heim; daughters, Alicia Recore of Albany, NY and Paula Kensil of Valencia, CA; sons, Philip Heim of Mariposa, CA and Paul Heim, II and wife Nancy of Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren, Meagan Kensil, Paige Kensil, Matthew Kensil, Brian Heim, Joseph Heim, Benjamin Goldstein, Ali Shiflet, Kelsey Pike and Karly Caton. In addition to his parents, his daughter Mary Beth Heim, sister, Eleanor Crawford, and brother, Joseph L. Heim, preceded him in death. The family will receive friends at St. Egbert Catholic Church on Friday, March 3, from 7:00 9:00 p.m. with a Christian Wake Service at 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, P. O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101; St. Egbert Catholic School, 1705 Evans Street, Morehead City, NC 28557; or Marthas Mission Cupboard, PO Box 603, Morehead City, NC 28557. The family thanks Dr. Alonzo Davis and staff, Dr. Marson, Dr. Loynes, and the nurses and staff on the 3rd floor of Carteret Health Care.
