Patricia Kemp

November 20, 1936 — September 25, 2017

Obituary Patricia K. Allan Kemp of Beaufort, passed away peacefully Monday, September 25, 2017, at SECU Hospice House, Newport, after a long struggle with COPD. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Richard (Dick) Kemp, daughters Courtney Kemp Boyd, of Atlanta, Ga.; Leigh Edana Meredith, of Charlottesville, Va.; son-in-law Hal Boyd and grandchildren, Katie Boyd and Parker Boyd, also of Atlanta, Ga.; and niece Suzan Allan Marshall of Richmond, Va. Pat was a North Carolina native, born on November 20, 1936 in Albemarle, N.C. and preceded in death by her parents, Ruth Hawkes Allan and Duncan McHattie Allan, and brother, Duncan Gordon Allan. As a 1961 graduate of WCUNC, now UNCG, Pat majored in Home Economics/Textiles. With her marriage after college to Dick Kemp of Princess Anne, Maryland, she turned to the Extension Service in Somerset County as an initial career. Pat started many 4-H clubs and a week-long 4-H summer camp. The 4-H youth who worked with Pat competed with their projects in contests at the state level and many won including Pat's daughter, Courtney. After the birth of two daughters, Pat began a career in social work with Somerset County Department of Social Services in Princess Anne. She took on the difficult position of working with abused women and children, at times putting herself in danger to help her clients. Pat and her family also enjoyed being members of historic Manokin Presbyterian Church. The Kemps moved to Raleigh, N.C., in the mid-80s where Mr. Kemp attended NC State to earn a Master's in Landscape Architecture. His design/build career in landscaping eventually brought them to Beaufort in the early 90s. In Beaufort, Mrs. Kemp continued in social work with Beaufort Social Services in the Extended Education program. Beyond church membership at First Presbyterian Church, Morehead City, Pat found her niche in various organizations. In the Rotary Ole Towne group, she initiated socials that continue now as a standard part of the local program which serves the community in major outreach opportunities, particularly scholarships. In the Beaufort Historical Association, Pats leadership led her to be a frequent housemother for the annual Old Homes and Gardens Tours. She served a number of years on the Tour Planning Committee, key to selecting homes for the annual tours. As a long-time member of the Beaufort Garden Club, Pat displayed her flower arranging skills, particularly for the BHA Tours, when homeowners looked to BGC members for this community service. In the Beaufort Womans Club, Pat capitalized on the membership growth of the historic club. Reaching beyond these established club opportunities, Mrs. Kemp will be long remembered for the Couples Supper Club she and her husband started in Beaufort in the 90s. The plan was 16 couples meeting in the homes in an alternating pattern, hosting or attending on a once-a-month basis. The club is still in existence, now with 32 members, providing a way for residents, both new or established, to enjoy food and fellowship. A graveside service will be held in Beaufort on Saturday, October 7, at 2:00 p.m. at Oceanview Cemetery, Ann St. Extension, followed by "One Last Pat Kemp Party" at the Kemp residence at 215 Moore Street, Beaufort. The Reverend Timothy Havlicek, Senior Pastor, First Presbyterian Church of Morehead City, will lead the graveside service with arrangements through Brooks Funeral Home. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be considered for the SECU Hospice House, Newport, and PAWS of Carteret. &nbspBorn: November 20, 1936&nbspPlace of Birth: Albemarle, NC&nbspDeath: September 25, 2017&nbspPlace of Death: Newport, NC&nbspOccupation: Social Worker Graveside Service Saturday October 7, 2017 , 2:00 PM at Ocean View Cemetery Share your thoughts and memories in the guestbook.
