Mortimer 'Morty' West

Obituary Mortimer Morty Lawson West, 65, of Morehead City, died Friday, May 2, 2014, at CarolinaEast Medical Center, New Bern. His memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2014, at Brooks Funeral Home with the Rev. Karl Zorowski, pastor of St. Peters United Methodist Church, officiating. Morty was born on January 12, 1949, in Morehead City to Melvin Lawson West and Esther Elizabeth Yeager West. He graduated from West Carteret High School and served in the United States Army. He was a member of St. Peters United Methodist Church. He is survived by his brothers: Barry J. West and wife, Sarah, of Morehead City, and Greg Guthrie and wife, Kathy, of Morehead City; sisters: Melva Lewis and husband, Doug, of Beaufort and Gay LaPointe and husband, Ross, of Cape Carteret, as well as his grandson, Jacob Poole of Portsmouth, Virginia. In addition to his parents, his daughter Kimberly A. Cummings, preceded him in death. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carteret County Humane Society, 853 Hibbs Road, Newport, NC 28570.
