Maureen Patricia Barber (née Bennett), affectionately known as Granny, passed away peacefully August 27, 2024, at the age of 91 in Beaufort, North Carolina. Born on June 9, 1933, in Newark, New Jersey, Maureen was a beacon of love and humor, always considerate of others and cherished by all who knew her.
Maureen’s devotion to children and their development led to her dedicating 18 years of her life to nurturing young minds as a primary school teacher at Summit School in Winston-Salem, NC. Her passion for education was paralleled by her deep commitment to her family, always ensuring they felt loved and supported.
Maureen is survived by her husband of 70 years, Ray; her son, Ray (Tracy); her daughter, Theresa (Don); 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sharon; her son, Leo; her parents, Ethyl and George; and her sister, Eileen.
A proud alumna of Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, NJ, and Towson State University in Towson, MD, Maureen's love for learning was evident throughout her life. Her creative spirit shone brightly, especially in her sewing projects, crafting everything from clothing to curtains and decorations, all inspired by her love of living near the seashore.
Maureen was a faithful member of St. Egbert Catholic Church, where she participated actively in community and spiritual activities including membership in the St. Egbert Ladies Guild, St. Egbert Holy Mackerel Fishing Club and delivering Communion to the retired mariners at Snug Harbor. Her faith and family were the cornerstones of her life, guiding her through her journey with grace and resilience.
Noe-Brooks Funeral Home in Morehead City, NC, is assisting the family during this time. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 5, 2024, at St Egbert Catholic Church in Morehead City. Maureen's life will be celebrated and remembered for the incredible warmth and joy she brought into the world. Her legacy of love, creativity, and dedication to education will continue to inspire those who knew her.
