Madison "Mat" Riffe

Obituary Madison "Mat" McLaurine Riffe, 56, of Beaufort, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2018, at his home. A service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 26, at Brooks Funeral Home with the Rev. Taylor Mills officiating. He was born on August 14, 1961 in Philadelphia, PA to Bill Riffe and Nancy Lee-Riffe. Mat grew up and went to school in Berea, Kentucky. He spent his summers in Carteret County with his Dad, and eventually moved to Carteret County where he met his wife Edith. They met at the Backstreet Pub in downtown Beaufort, and were married a couple years later in Beaufort in Ediths best friends mothers garden. Mat was a Merchant Marine and a licensed tug boat Captain. He was a master carpenter and built his family home in 2003. His work on many homes in Beaufort touched numerous peoples hearts and leaves a lasting legacy of his talent. He loved scouting and was very active in Troop 572 with his son. Mat had a genuine love of history, and a special love for the history of Carteret County. He loved his dog Dynamite, and will be remembered for his daily walks around town. There will always be fond memories for Will of the time his father spent with him working on the house in Hiddenite. He leaves behind his wife, Edith Everhart Riffe, of nearly 30 years, and son, Christopher Willis Riffe, both of the home. He is also survived by his father, Bill, and his wife, Anne, of Beaufort; siblings, Chris, and wife Nancy, and sister, Beth, all of Houston, Texas, Dan, of Morehead City, and George of Beaufort; father in law, Donald Lockhart, of Beaufort; sister and brother in law, Laura and Larry Gillikin of Bettie, and sister in law, Donna Lockhart, of Beaufort, and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 1:00 2:00 p.m. and will welcome visitors at their home. Mat was preceded in death by his mother, Nancy Lee-Riffe, and his sister, Suzie Riffe. Memorial donations in Mats honor may be made to Boy Scout Troop 252, 585 Hwy 70, Davis, NC 28524. Mat was greatly loved and will be missed by many.
