Madeline Austin

September 20, 1920 — September 4, 2014

Obituary Madeline Gould Austin, 93, of Beaufort, passed away Thursday, September 4, 2014, at PruittHealth at Sea Level, Sea Level, NC. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 6, at Carteret Memorial Gardens, Hwy 101, Beaufort with the Rev. Michael Fields officiating. Madeline was born a Promise Lander of Morehead City on September 20, 1920. She was the second child of the late Captain Dave and Priscilla Guthrie Gould. Her early life was filled with both fun and hard work helping her family. Often she spoke of the beauty of Bogue Sound and how it both fed her family and provided so much fun at the same time. Working was a theme that continued throughout her life. She worked while in school and was also employed for over 2 years at the USO in the 1940s. It was during this time she met and married Gerald Austin. She often accompanied him on his trips delivering seafood until their sons were born. She kept books for the Carteret Fish Company, their family business until it was sold. Madeline and Gerald also had a farm for many years. They grew wonderful vegetables which they would share with their family and friends. Over the years Madeline worked at Tom Togs, The Vogue, and The Fudge Factory making lifetime friendships with those she met along the way. At an age when many others would have retired, she began another chapter of her life by volunteering for many years at Beaufort Elementary School tutoring children and assisting teachers. The strong and caring devotion which was given to her own family also extended to those around her. She was dedicated to her church and served it faithfully. She was also a lifetime member of the Rebekah Lodge holding many leadership roles as well as cooking and serving for their many fundraisers. Madeline was a loving, kind, and generous mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt. Her home was filled with the aromas of her wonderful cooking, especially her yeast rolls! One never visited her without either being served something she had made or taking it home with them to enjoy later! Madeline is survived by sons, Gerald Jerry Austin and wife, Victoria Vickie, Robert Bobby Austin and wife, Cynthia Sindi two grandchildren, Alicia A.
