Obituary Lucille Parker Guthrie, 99, of Beaufort, died Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay, Sea Level, NC. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, at Carteret Memorial Gardens, Beaufort, NC with The Rev. David C. Wade officiating. Mrs. Guthrie was born on December 6, 1914, in Old Fort, NC to Julius Franklin and Effie Gibson Parker. In addition to her parents, her sisters, Reba Parker Hooks, Elizabeth Parker Reeves and Janette Parker Fisher, predecease her. After graduating from her beloved Meredith College in 1936, she taught school at Newport High School and was introduced to and married the love of her life, the late Clarence Hudson Guthrie of Beaufort. She was active in her church serving as superintendent of the Sunday school, Board of Trustees member and teaching youth classes for many years. In the community, Mrs. Guthrie volunteered with the Beaufort Historical Association, Beaufort Elementary School and served on the Carteret County Library Board and the Beaufort Urban Renewal Board. She was a loving wife and mother, loyal friend, dedicated gardener, amateur artist, fabulous cook, gracious hostess and lover of literature. To her siblings, she was Lucy, to her Meredith classmates, Pooh, Miss Parker to her Newport students, and Lucille to her Beaufort family and friends. Mrs. Guthrie is survived by her three children, Suzanne Guthrie Letchworth (Jerry), of Cary, C. Hudson Guthrie (Gayle) of St. Louis, MO and Jeanne Cookie Parker Guthrie Newton of Nashville, TN, brothers, Frank Parker of Marion and James Parker of Lubbock Texas, and brother in law, George Hooks of Rocky Mount. In addition to eight grandchildren and two great-granddaughters, she is also survived by loving nieces, nephews and their families. The family will receive friends at 502 Ship Mast Court, (Eastmans Creek) Beaufort. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Legacy Scholarship, Meredith College, 3800 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27607 or Ann Street United Methodist Church, 417 Ann Street, Beaufort, NC 28516.
