Lois Rose Burger

April 2, 1935 — April 11, 2025

Raleigh

Lois Rose Burger passed away on April 11, 2025 at the age of 90. At the time of her passing, she was a resident of the Terra Bella Northridge Assisted Living Facility in Raleigh, NC. Prior to moving into Assisted Living, Lois had been a resident of Greenville, NC for almost 40 years. Her family wishes to thank the staff of Terra Bella Northridge and 3-HC Hospice for their kindness and compassionate care of Lois in her final years.

Lois was born and raised in Sea Level, NC. She was the only child of Ulmont Rose and Blanche Gaskill Rose. In 1953, she graduated from Atlantic High School and attended East Carolina University. Lois worked at the Carteret County Department of Social Services for many years and later worked for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Upon her retirement in 1999, she received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

While living in Greenville, Lois volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and helped to organize free dental clinics in Washington, NC. She was a tireless supporter of the Pitt County Arts Community and loved nothing more than attending jazz concerts, plays, and art shows by local artists. She was a voracious reader and always up on politics, and, of course, the latest fashions!

After her retirement, Lois lived out her dreams of traveling to Europe and the United Kingdom. She was particularly happy that she was able to travel with many of her dear friends. She also traveled around the United States as well, with many trips to her favorite place, New York City.

There is a story about a trip to New York City that she loved to share. Lois was in Manhattan in the 1960's and had dinner at a well-known seafood restaurant. Upon leaving the restaurant, she saw a wooden box out front leaning against the building. The lid read, "T. A. Taylor and Sons Seafood, Sea Level, NC." She laughed out loud and said, "Well, I've come all the way to New York City to eat a piece of fish my daddy probably caught." This story is symbolic of who Lois was-she loved the excitement of the "big city" but she also was very proud to be from Down East, which was always her true home.

Lois is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Owens McIntyre and son-in-law, Jeffrey McIntyre and her daughter, Rachel Willis Elkinton and son-in-law, Richard Elkinton. She is also survived by cousins and dear friends and her tabby cat, "Little Biggie."

A memorial service will be held on May 3rd, 2025, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Beaufort, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum in Harkers Island, NC.

Lois will be greatly missed and to paraphrase one of her favorite songs, "She Did it Her Way!"
