Leewood 'Lee' Shaw

July 24, 1938 — January 2, 2018

Obituary Leewood (Lee) Leforrest Shaw, 79, of Morehead City, departed this life on Monday, January 2, 2018 at Crystal Coast Hospice House, Newport, North Carolina. He was born to Virginia and Leewood Shaw on July 24, 1938 in Lynn, Massachusetts. His parents predeceased him. Lee is survived by his wife, Joan Canalori Shaw, with whom he resided, sisters, Susan McAuliffe and Cathy Phelps of Connecticut, Priscilla Madden of Florida, and brothers, Ben Phelps and Larry Phelps of Connecticut. Lee was a natural storyteller; his talent rivaled that of Mark Twain. No subject was "off limits" as Lee poignantly satirized lifes experiences with jokes and stories of his childhood and family, military experiences, and life in general. He always had a story or joke to share, rarely leaving someones presence without "one last one." Lee was often at the center of a gathering and loved sharing his carefully constructed stories. Contrasting, or perhaps complimenting this, Lee was a serious student of history. History, "according to Lee", reveled in the discovery of "the side stories" of historical events - reflecting his ability to redirect a focus, even a historical one and to delve into the fine details that showed the impact of history on individuals. Lee loved storytelling - fact and fiction. He has left a lasting impression on all who knew him and his stories will not be forgotten. Lee loved nature, the environment and conservation. He was an avid gardener who shared the fruits of his labor with family and friends. His passion for the water was visible and he was never happier than when he was on the water. Lee filled his days with activities such as sailing, fishing, and clamming. Lees unique charisma was loved and admired by those who knew him. The world has lost a gentle soul; indeed Lee will be missed. Funeral service will be private, held in Connecticut.
