Obituary Kathleen "Katie" Kirk, age 74 of Morehead City, died December 29, 2018 at home surrounded by her family. Memorial Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Morehead City on Saturday January 5, 2019 at 11AM. The Rev. Powell Osteen will officiate. An additional Memorial Service will be held at Glen Mar United Methodist Church in Ellicott City, Maryland on Saturday January 12 at 11 AM, with Reverend Doctor Anders Lunt officiating. Katie was born in Washington DC on March 2, 1944 to her parents Richard and Bertha Draper. Katie had a way of captivating people. Even in her younger years, she was a kind and gentle soul that thought of others before herself. Everyone that met her fell in love with her and her passion for life. Katie graduated high school from the Academy of Holy Names in Silver Spring, Maryland and received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maryland. For 27 years she worked as a NASA and NOAA systems analyst and program manager on the Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking System (SARSAT). Since 1982 the SARSAT program has rescued over 43,000 people worldwide. She met her husband, Joe, and they joined their families together in May, 1987. For over 20 years they made their home in Columbia, Maryland. They were faithful active members of Glen Mar United Methodist Church. After their retirement they moved to Morehead City, North Carolina where they became members of the First United Methodist Church. Her days were filled with traveling, spending time with her family and playing golf and bridge with her friends Katie enjoyed taking cruises, dancing, bridge, golf, book clubs, shopping, entertaining, spending time at the pool or the beach, watching HGTV, the Food Network and of course Hallmark movies. Katie had a passion for her family, friends and God. Katies faith and family kept her strong throughout some of her lifes most difficult challenges. She found immense joy in her precious family and in the Lord, both of which she always loved unconditionally. Katies love of life and her kind heart will be her legacy. Katie is survived by her loving husband Joseph "Joe" Kirk; her sisters, Margaret Vreeland (Richard) and Mary Draper (Thomas); her daughter Julie Holt (Jeff); her sons Mark Drissel (Anne) and Joseph Drissel (Dale); step-sons, Beckett Kirk (Kristena) and Evan Kirk (fiance Rhen); and her grandchildren, Jordan, Linus, Ava, Jake, Azul, Sarah, Joseph, and Kristian. A reception will be held following the service at First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Richard and her sister Jane. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to First United Methodist Church, 900 Arendell St. Morehead City, NC 28557 or the American Cancer Society.
