Obituary Judith Moore Spitsbergen, 78, passed away in peace at the Crystal Coast Hospice House on November 9, 2018, with her husband and son by her side. She was born on August 5, 1940, in Wilmington, NC to the late Dr. Laurie Walker Moore, Sr. and Anne Neale Moore of Beaufort. Judy was a graduate of Beaufort High School, and she earned a B.A. in Sciences from Salem College, and a M.E. in Science Education from Duke University. She returned to her home town of Beaufort to devote her career to the community as her parents had done. She accepted teaching positions with the Regional Marine Science Project of Carteret County through the NC Public Schools. She then served as curator at the Hampton Mariners Museum, where she was responsible for educating museum visitors on marine ecology through museum exhibits, and regularly guided local students and museum visitors on educational explorations of Carteret County coastal sites, including Shackelford Banks. She helped develop and realize the Annual Strange Seafood Exhibition and authored a cookbook for the event, as well as authoring the book, Seacoast Life. Judy was influential in the conceptualization and establishment of the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, where she continued her work as education curator. Following this, she served as Executive Director of the Beaufort Historical Association, where she developed programs, events and historical exhibits to educate visitors on Beauforts rich history. In her personal time, she was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending time with her beloved "lunch bunch". Throughout her life she passionately pursued, and was completely dedicated to, all of her endeavors and interests, and enthusiastically supported her children in exploring and achieving theirs. Judy is survived by her husband Dennis Spitsbergen of Morehead City, NC, her brother Dr. Laurie (Pat) Moore, Jr. of Winston-Salem, NC, son John Scarff of Wilmington, NC, daughter Ann Pryor (Scott) Manning of Charlotte, NC, grandson Andrew (Caroline) Scarff of Raleigh, NC, grandson Nicholas Scarff of Raleigh, NC and grandson Preston Manning and granddaughter Charlotte Manning of Charlotte, NC. We will celebrate her life on Saturday, November 24, at Beaufort Grocery, from 9:30-11:30 am. Donations can be made in her name to the Crystal Coast Hospice House.
