Obituary Joseph Gordon Smith, 31, of Newport, died Thursday, October 19, 2017, at Carteret Health Care in Morehead City. A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, October 22, 2017, at 1:00 PM at Brooks Funeral Home in Morehead City. Visitation will follow the service at the funeral home. He was born on October 31, 1985, in Greenville to Phillip Smith and Robin Smith (now Kofahl). He is survived by his parents, Phillip Smith, and Robin and Chris Kofahl, of Newport; siblings, James Kofahl and Victoria Quinones of Kinston; grandmother, Sue Fox of Littlestown, PA; uncle, Danny Fox of Littlestown, PA; aunts, Debb Newton of Beaufort, Dawn Ziegler of Littlestown, PA, Debbie Strupp of Slinger, WI, Denise Rutley of Slinger, WI, Donna Hull of Littlestown, PA, and Judy Padrick of Newport; and loving caregivers, Louella Frazier and Teresa Gillikin. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Cecil Smith, Geraldine Smith and Danny Fox. The Hoyt Foundation was founded by world renowned athletes, Dick and Rick Hoyt, promoting the inclusion of disabled young people in all facets of daily life, including road races, triathlons, and other endurance events. In 2008, Joes uncle Jeff ran the Boston Marathon with Team Hoyt, wearing a photo of Joe on his shirt.
