Obituary 1-888-579-7953 Code: 2002089P Joseph Van Mason, 83, of Havelock died Saturday, July 23, 2016, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House, Newport. A memorial service with Masonic Rites will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 30, at Atlantic United Methodist Church with the Rev. George Gouge and the Rev. Paul Harris officiating. He was born in Colombia, NC on November 21, 1932 to Clyde Mason, Sr. and Hester Lee Davenport Mason. He attended Atlantic Graded School and served in the United States Army from 1953 1955. Mr. Mason graduated from East Carolina Teachers College and taught social studies in Virginia and North Carolina. In North Carolina, a portion of his teaching was at Havelock High School. After teaching he was a civil service employee at the Naval Air Rework Facility, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point from which he retired. Mr. Mason was a member of Newport Masonic Lodge #706, the Carteret County Shrine Club and Atlantic United Methodist Church. He is survived by his niece, Susan Mason of Atlantic, NC; sister-in-law, Pat Mason of Sanford, NC; first cousins, Mary Lee Pake of Smyrna, NC, Lou Ann Lyerly of Smyrna, NC, Charles Pritchett of Raleigh, NC; step-children, Donna Peel of Bay St. Louis, MS, Kenny Bell of Williamsburg, VA, Cheryl Bell of Kitty Hawk, NC and Pamela Cunningham of Hampton, VA; step-grandchildren, Louis Rivera of Havelock, Natalie Scott of Charlotte, Victor Rivera of Salem, MA and Zackary Bell of Suffolk, VA; and his beloved dog Cindy as well as beloved cousins and brothers of the Masonic Lodge. He is preceded in death by his parents, his companion of 41 years Nell Bell, sister, Jency Mae Leonard, brothers, Stevie Mason and Clyde Mason, Jr. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, c/o Sudan Shriners, 403 E.
