Joseph 'Joe' Washington, Sr.

Obituary Joseph Washington Sr, 90, of Morehead City, passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport, NC. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church of Morehead City. The family will receive friends one hour prior. Joseph "Joe" Washington Sr. accepted Christ and united with St. Luke M.B. Church at the age of 57. He served on the Ushers Board and Trustee Board. Joe was a menhaden fisherman in Sunrise, LA, when he met the love of his life, Demaris "Peggy". They were married for 61 years. Later Joe gave up the fishing and worked at the Morehead City Port until he retired in 1998. Joe loved to cook (especially seafood), and fishing. He loved people and knew everyone. Everyone knew him and loved him. He will be missed by our church and the community. Joseph was survived by his loving wife, Demaris Washington; daughter, Josie Nanton of Miami, FL; son, Joseph Washington Jr. (Denise) of Newport; two sisters, Page Campbell of Greensboro, and Dorothy Jones of Alabama; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Coretta Washington; son, Billy Rutledge; two daughters, Angela Dunn and Ava Godette; brother, Fred Washington; two sisters, Coretta Washington and Nettie Neal. A special thanks goes to Deacon Sidney and Mother Ann Hargrove, Sister Paula Price, Sister Tressa Jones and Kathy Perrini, his caregiver, lifelong friends, Dan Horton, Robert Jones, Billy Fisher and the late Elijah Holland.
