November 3, 1934 — November 15, 2014

Obituary Joseph Hampton Hollinshed, 80, formerly of Fayetteville, died November 15, 2014, surrounded by his family and rescue dog, Hercules, at the home he restored in Beaufort. Born in Fayetteville to the late Mary Emma Rothwell and Vivian E. Hollinshed, Joe spent his entire life there until retiring to Beaufort. He spent 40 years in his family-owned Cape Fear Supply, a building materials business, which he and his brother, Vivian, sold in 1997. Joe graduated from Fayetteville High School and attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served in the US Army in Germany. His duty as company clerk enabled him to have a pass to most cities in Europe. While in Fayetteville, Joe was active in many community activities and on numerous boards, including Cape Fear Industries, BB&T, Home Federal Savings and Loan, the Cumberland Community Foundation, Friends of the Children at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. The Fayetteville Kiwanis Club named him to the Legion of Honor and gave him a life membership after 35 years of service. He also served as president of the Southern Building Materials Association, a multi-state trade association of independent building material dealers. Joe served in many leadership positions at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Fayetteville, including treasurer and senior warden as well as serving on the building committee during construction of a new sanctuary. He sang in the choir more than 30 years. Not having a son of his own, Joe headed a Boy Scout troop. Many of his boys went on to become doctors, community leaders and even a Bishop in the Episcopal Church. He excelled as a drummer, and as a youth earned money and notoriety as a member of The Kat-Bird Trio, a jazz group he formed in high school. In 1952, it beat out 100 groups to win the first Fayetteville Kiwanis Club Talent Night. The trio also performed at the USO in Fayetteville, at the time the worlds largest. Joe helped form Dark Branch Racquet and Swim Club in Fayetteville, bringing tennis, his favorite sport, to a new level and hosting numerous tournaments. In 1970 he led his softball team to first place in City League Softball in Fayetteville. He was also a golfer, boater, fisherman and kayaker. Among his hobbies over the years was model boat building, something to keep him busy when it was too cold for outdoors sports. Joe and his wife of 28 years, Marianna, have had a home in Carteret County since 1990, first near Gloucester and then moving to Beaufort in 1994. They purchased the dilapidated Buckman House, built in 1848, on Ann Street in 1999 and spent two years meticulously restoring it before making it their home. It has been part of Beauforts Old Homes Tour twice. Joes interest in restoration goes back many years. He saved the cupola from his old high school when it was scheduled for the wrecking ball, contributing it to the City of Fayetteville. He collected old warehouses and was the source for heart pine for many projects in and around Fayetteville. Being involved in his community did not stop after Joes retirement. He served on the Board of Governors and Foundation of the Beaufort Historic Association, and at the time of his death, Joe was working with the Friends of the NC Maritime Museum to develop the Gallants Channel Annex. He was proud of being an honorary member of the Beaufort Womans Club. He assisted the club with fund-raising activities such as the Shrimp Boat Parade for the purchase of the c.1776 Ward-Hancock House, Beauforts first customs house, for the maritime museum. He was also instrumental in helping raise funds for the historic associations double-decker bus, a Beaufort icon. Joe loved piddling around Beaufort with his friend Dick deButts, looking for projects. They built an owl house in the St. Pauls Episcopal Church cemetery for an injured owl that had been rehabilitated at Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter. Joe and friends built the shade hut at Beauforts new public tennis courts. For years each weekend from April to November, he and Marianna hauled the Friends of the Librarys red book wagon to and from the library and First Citizens parking lot where the sale of used books benefitted the library. In 2009, the Hollinsheds won the Third Annual Crab Cake Cook-Off hosted as a fund raiser by the Friends of the NC Maritime Museum. The couple walked the Coast to Coast long distance pathway in England and the Milford Track in New Zealand. Joe raised orchids, first in a greenhouse in Fayetteville, then in a Victorian greenhouse in his Beaufort yard before moving to a larger facility nearby. He turned the Victorian greenhouse into a chicken coop, providing fresh eggs for the neighborhood. At the time of his death, he was CEO of Sea-Agri, LLC, which cultivated oysters and good times. His funeral will be Monday, November 17, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Pauls Episcopal Church, Beaufort. The Rev. Thomas Midyette will officiate. A reception will follow at the church. The family will then travel to Fayetteville for the Committal of his cremains in the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Memory Garden, Fayetteville. The Rev. Judith Reese will officiate. There will be a reception Monday, November 17 in the church Narthex from 5:30 7:30 p.m. Joe was predeceased by his first wife, Ellen Johnson Hollinshed, mother of their two daughters who survive them, Jane H.
