John Young

September 3, 1924 — October 11, 2015

Obituary John Morgan Young, 91, of Beaufort, died Sunday, October 11, 2015, at his home. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 15, at Grace Presbyterian Church, Beaufort, with the Rev. Ken Yearick officiating. The interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park, Morehead City. He was born September 3, 1924 in Stonega, VA to Charles Gentry Young and Claire Scott Young. After losing his mother at the age of 9 years, he spent the second half of his childhood at an orphanage during the school year with his brother Bob, which he said he didnt mind because he knew his younger brother needed him. Summers were spent at their Aunt Bess farm in the Appalachians, which he remembered as some of the best days of his life. He volunteered for the US Army during World War II, serving in the 69th Division that first met the Allied Russian forces in Torgau, Germany in April 1945. After surviving the war, he attended East Carolina University (ECU) on the GI Bill and earned a BA in Business. While at ECU, he played on their football team and met his wife, Daphne Pake. He would be a lifelong supporter of the ECU Pirates. His marriage to Daphne produced two daughters and would last 63 years, till Daphnes death in 2012. He owned a dry-cleaning business in Beaufort, NC for many years before moving to Virginia Beach. He and Daphne enjoyed traveling with Elderhostel programs during their retirement, and visiting with their children and grandchildren. Always a kid at heart, John would often get down on the floor to play with his grandchildren, and later, his great-grandchildren. He and Daphne eventually moved back to Beaufort for their final years. His family will remember John Young for his kindness, his unwavering love and support of his family, and his sometimes groan-worthy jokes. Though his military service was brief, he was proud of it for the rest of his life. He loved football, the song Stardust, his dog Millie, and a good meal. He maintained his sense of humor till his final days and never failed to make a lasting impression on those who met him. Those who knew him, even briefly, will remember him. Those who loved him their entire lives, will never replace him in their hearts. He is survived by his daughters, Sandra Young Kellum and her husband, Larry, of Bettie and Patricia Scotti Young Hester and her husband, George William Hester, of Mulberry, IN; grandchildren, Jackie Kellum of Beaufort, Larry Gray Kellum, Jr. of Newport News, VA, Geordie Hester and his wife, Kourtney, of Zionsville, IN, Shawn Pake Hester and his wife, Shelly, of Draper, UT. Four great-grandchildren are Natalie Hester, Graham Hester, Lauren Hester, and Warren Hester. In addition to his parents, his wife, Daphne Pake Young, and siblings, Charles Young, Nancy Young Lowery, and Robert Eugene Young preceded him in death.
