John Jones

Obituary 1-888-579-7953 Code: 2002089P John Robert Jones, 90, of Cedar Point died Thursday, April 23, 2015, at his home. He was born May 1, 1924 in the Octagon House at Cedar Point to John Sherwood Jones and May Fulford Jones. At the request of Mr. Jones, there will be no services. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and later attended Trade School in Nashville, TN. He worked for the Extension Division of North Carolina State College as Trade School instructor and supervisor at Morehead City Technical Institute, the forerunner of Carteret Community College, from 1947 to 1950 when he married Lois Anne Baily of Morehead City. He then owned three businesses known as Jones Earthmoving and Construction, Cedar Point Dredging Co., Inc. and Silverdale Marl Co., Inc., a quarry operation at Silverdale in Onslow County. He was instrumental in getting the travel trailer park established in the Croatan National Forest in Cedar Point in the 1950s and later the Western Carteret Ball Park and Community Center in Cedar Point. He was instrumental in establishing the Cedar Point Property Owners Association, Inc., the forerunner of the establishment of the Town of Cedar Point where he served 8 years as commissioner. He served approximately 20 years on the Multi-county Highway 24 Association and later on the Carteret County Economic Development Board and several times on the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce. He also served as a board member of a county attempt to establish a county-wide sewage system. He was a Blue Lodge Mason since 1945 and later earned the degrees of the Scottish Rite and York Rite. He was a member of both the Baptist and Methodist Churches in Swansboro and established the Unity Church in Cedar Point, which later moved to Morehead City. He made a life-time study of comparative world religions and philosophy. He is survived by his wife, Lois Baily Jones. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Broad Street Clinic Foundation, 500 North 35th Street, Morehead City, NC 28557.
