John "Buster" Tyrone Salter

John "Buster" Tyrone Salter, 77, of Atlantic, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2024, at Carteret Health Care in Morehead City. Born in Morehead City and raised in Atlantic, John was a proud graduate of Atlantic High School, class of 1965. 

John dedicated much of his life to Core Sound and surrounding areas as a commercial fisherman, a profession that defined many of his years. Later, he served with the North Carolina Department of Transportation Ferry Division. 

A man of diverse interests, John found joy in woodworking, winemaking, and studying history. He was particularly fond of poetry, often reciting "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost, a poem that resonated deeply with him. Above all, John cherished his family, who were the center of his world. 

He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Carol Thorne Salter, and their daughter, April Michelle Morton, along with her husband, Wes, of Gastonia. John was a proud grandfather to Joshua Morton (Rebekah) of Carolina Beach and Jalen Morton (Emily) of Gastonia, and a beloved great-grandfather (Go Go Daddy) to Paxton and Pierce Morton of Gastonia. He also leaves behind his sister, Sandra Lewis of Bettie; brothers, William "Billy" Salter (Cheryl) of New Bern, Kim Salter (Marjorie) of Atlantic, and Glen Salter of Atlantic; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny and June Salter. 

A private graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Atlantic Cemetery Fund, PO Box 222, Atlantic, NC 28511, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. John's memory will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
