Jeffrey Hugh Salter, 80, of Beaufort NC died on February 28, 2025. He was a strong man of deep faith. He had unfaltering character and integrity and was infused with intense loyalty. His great love of his country was exemplified by his loyal service to it. Most of all he was a man who dearly loved his family and showed it every day.
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Beaufort. A private burial will take place at Cedar Island Community Cemetery.
He is survived by his beloved wife Jeanette, his sons Jeff Salter, Jr. and his children William and Christopher; Chris Salter (Jennifer) and their children Hannah, Ella and Lucy and Les Salter (Tara) and their child Saylor; his daughter Cary Russell (Conard) and their child Berkley Russell; his baby sister Janet Salter McLendon; stepsons Christian Holland (Gina) and Glenn Holland and his child Marcus; nieces Cindy Lewis and Brenda Jenkins and nephews Walt Przygodzinski, William Giles and David Giles. He was preceded in death by his parents Hugh and Blanche (Bob) Salter and wife of 50 years Mary Lou Byrd Salter.
He grew up in Beaufort and was a member of the 1962 NC Championship Seadog basketball team that won 91 games in a row. He graduated from Campbell College with a BS in history. He served 20 years in the United States Secret Service protecting presidents, vice presidents, their families and visiting dignitaries. Following this, he worked as personal protection for the Secretary of Transportation before going to the Office of Inspector General in the Office of Personnel Management where he investigated fraud. Many millions of dollars in fines for medical fraud were collected from offenders because of his investigative work.
Faith was an unwavering fundamental in his life. He was a Sunday School teacher in the churches he attended. He encouraged all to find their personal faith. He often said he just did not feel right if he did not make it to church on Sunday (He did decide in his retirement years that the later service was just as fulfilling as the early service!).
One of the greatest joys of his life was being a father and grandfather. Even with the extraordinary responsibilities that his career carried, he made sure his children knew their father prioritized them. By coaching their various sports, lending an ear, encouraging them through life, he never wavered in his commitment to his family. He was immensely proud of how they were uniquely honorable adults. By his example, his children and grandchildren have learned that honesty, integrity and giving it your all is what matters in life.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Lions Club, American Legion and The American Wine Society. He loved to garden, read history books, cook, brew beer and most of all to spend time with his precious family and many, many friends. He will be greatly missed and his love for us all will endure.
