Obituary Jeanette Dukes Davenport, 92, of Morehead City, died Monday, January 26, 2015, at Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay, Sea Level, NC. Her funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 2, 2015, at First United Methodist Church, Morehead City, with the Rev. E. Powell Osteen, Jr. and the Rev. Joseph Franklin officiating. Jeanette was the second of five girls born to Julian Leroy and Margaret Summers Dukes of Orangeburg, South Carolina. She earned her home economics and child development degree from Winthrop University in 1943 and then went to work with Eastern Air Lines. When Naval Aviator, Bill Trammell Davenport returned from World War II, Atlantic and Pacific duty, they were married July 22, 1944, in Orangeburg. After the war, they lived in Charlotte, North Carolina and Norfolk, Virginia, where Bill continued his Navy Reserve duty and worked as a certified public accountant. In 1959 they moved to Morehead City where Bill was head auditor for Cherry Point Marine Air Station. The family joined First United Methodist Church in Morehead City in 1959 and Jeanette sang in the choir for forty years. Jeanette was a charter member of Sea and Sound Garden Club which she named during her presidency. She began teaching the first special education class in Morehead City schools and led those children for nine years. In retirement, Jeanette and Bill were devoted to family, local friends, travel, and dancing. She is survived by her two children; son, Bill Trammell Davenport, Jr. and his wife, Katie, of Raleigh, daughter, Jean Davenport Peterson of Morehead City and Clinton, NC; sisters, Lillian Gamble of Charlottesville, VA, and Grace Livingston of Lexington, South Carolina; grandchildren are Will Davenport and wife, Sarah, of Broomfield, Colorado, Dr. Susan Denny and husband, Dr. John Denny, of Raleigh, Shannon Miller and husband, Kevin, of Cape Carteret and Lin Peterson and wife, Megan, of Raleigh; great-grandchildren are Madeline and Luke Davenport, Jack and Kate Denny and Trammell Miller. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, her husband, Bill Trammell Davenport and two sisters; Margaret Dukes and Virginia Moss preceded her in death. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church Choir Fund, 900 Arendell Street, Morehead City, NC 28557.
