Obituary Carolyn Jean Whitaker Temple, 80, of Newport, died Sunday, October 7, 2018 at Croatan Ridge Nursing Center, Newport. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, October 13, 2018 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery, Newport, with the Rev. Karl Zorowski, officiating. The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday, October 12, 2018. Jean was born July 19, 1938, in Greenville, to Garland and Rena Mae Whitaker. She is a graduate of Newport High School and James Walker Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Wilmington. Jean worked as a Registered Nurse for over 40 years. She is a member of St. Peters United Methodist Church. During her last two decades of life Jean had multiple health issues including many painful joint operations then afterwards developing Lewy body dementia in her last years. She rarely complained never feeling sorry for herself. Always smiling, she seemed genuinely happy in her world making it pleasant for those around her. Dementia is a terrible disease that she handled extremely well. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Ralph Berlyn Temple, of Newport; two daughters, Kim Temple Porter and her husband Weston, of Newport, and Kristy Temple Bell and her husband Keith, of Newport; three sisters, Barbara Robertson of Newport, Betty Gainey, of Morehead City, and Delores Whitaker, of Morehead City; one brother, Kenny Whitaker, of Newport, a sister-in-law Betty Whitaker, of Newport; five grandchildren, Thomas Porter, Kristina Bell, Ashley Porter, Kaysa Bell and Kayden Bell; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, her brothers, Garland Whitaker and Steven Whitaker, preceded her in death. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of ones choice.
