James Midgett

Obituary James Aubrey Midgett, 94, of Beaufort, died peacefully at home in the company of his family on Monday, August 15, 2016. Born and reared on a farm in Currituck County, he was the son of Raymond Parker Midgett and Jessie Piland Midgett and the brother of Mildred Midgett Markert. James graduated from Oak Ridge Military Institute and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill following his service as a First Lieutenant in the Infantry during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart for action in France. He also served during the Korean Conflict. In 1944, James married Mary Spence Thompson of Kinston where he resided until retiring to Beaufort in 1983. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he enjoyed traveling, reading, observing nature, collecting coins, landscaping, woodworking, and photography. He was a very talented horticulturalist, particularly adept at caring for cacti and orchids. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years and his sister. He is survived by his four children, Jane, Ray, Lea, and Russell, and their spouses. He was adored by six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. James was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Beaufort where a service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 20. A private interment will follow in the Midgett family cemetery at Waterlily. Following the service, a reception will be held in the fellowship hall of St. Pauls Episcopal Church.
