Obituary Howard Cole Jones, Jr., 87, of Beaufort died Monday, March 6, 2017, at Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay, Sea Level, NC. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 10, at Ann Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Taylor Mills officiating. Mr. Jones was born in Beaufort on December 10, 1929 to Howard Cole Jones and Carrie Skarren Jones. He spent his life in Beaufort, graduating from Beaufort High School in 1949. Howard joined the United States Coast Guard and served from 1950 until 1953 during the Korean Conflict. He was employed by the U. S. Postal Service in Beaufort until his retirement in 1984. He has been a lifelong member of Ann Street United Methodist Church. Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Fond Mason Jones, a son, Hugh Jones and wife Julie of Carrboro as well as grandchildren; Megan Nelson and husband, Greg; Hayley Greene and husband, Tommy; Ben Jones and wife, Bronwyn Duffield, Katherine Jones, and Grace Adkins and husband, Jad Adkins; and great-grandchildren: Aubrey, Luke and Reid Nelson. In addition to his parents, his son, Howard Cole Jones, III and sister, Carrie Lee Dale preceded him in death. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, March 9, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ann Street United Methodist Church, 417 Ann Street, Beaufort, NC 28516.
