Holden Ballou

Obituary Charles Holden Ballou, 88, of Beaufort, passed away in his sleep on Friday, February 6, 2015, at Mayview Convalescent Center in Raleigh, N. C. His service is 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at Ann Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. David C. Wade officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at St. Paul's Episcopal cemetery. Holden was born on March 16, 1926, in Morehead City, NC, to William Headen Ballou and Iona Smithson Ballou. Holden proudly served his country as a Pharmacist Mate First Class in the Navy during WWII. He served his community in many capacities including the Chamber of Commerce; Rotary; Town Board of Commissioners; Beaufort Historical Association; Beaufort Urban Renewal Commission, and Beaufort Housing Commission. He served his church in numerous positions including Trustee, Church School Superintendent, Lay Leader, Chairman of Official Board, Youth Sunday School teacher and Co-Teacher of the Men's Bible Class. Holden was in the restaurant business for 20 years; followed by home building for 20 years. After "retiring" he continued building by making hand crafted furniture and bird houses. He enjoyed walking with his wife of 66 years, Dora Dean; cooking for his family and making homemade doughnuts with his grandchildren. He enjoyed life and had a keen sense of humor which he kept in spite of his battle with dementia. Holden is survived by a daughter Julie Ballou Logan and her husband Robert of Raleigh; son Steve Ballou and his wife Kathryn of Lakewood Ranch, FL; grandchildren, Leslie Logan Brown and husband Nathaniel of Raleigh; Joshua Logan of Raleigh; Jill Ballou Newhouse and husband Joe, of Ft. Gordon, Ga; Jefferson Ballou and wife Jaci of Forest, Va; great-grandchildren, Kaylynne Leggett, Jeremiah Leggett, David Brown, Timothy Newhouse, Abby Newhouse, Mallory Ballou, Jackson Ballou, Adelyn Ballou, and his sister, Sara Webb. In addition to his wife, Dora Dean, he was preceded in death by a son, Charles Holden Ballou, Jr., his parents and 8 brothers and sisters. The family will visit with friends and family between 12:00 and 1:45 at the Ann Street Methodist Church Eure Building. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Ann Street United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 417 Ann Street, Beaufort, NC 28516 or the charity of one's choice.
