Herman Wetherington, Jr.

Herman Joseph Wetherington Jr., a devoted family man, esteemed businessman, and beloved member of the Carteret County community, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 26, 2024, at Crystal Coast Hospice House with family at his side.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, February 2, 2024, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Morehead City Ward.

Born on May 25, 1943, to the late Herman Wetherington Sr. and Vivian Harvey Wetherington, Herman's life was defined by his dedication to his loved ones and his passion for his many interests and hobbies.

Herman was born and raised in Morehead City, where he grew up surrounded by his friends and loving family. After graduating from Morehead City High School, he went on to become the respected owner and operator of Wetherington Glass Shop, a cornerstone of local business in the community. His professional achievements were complemented by his active involvement in various associations, where his contributions were invaluable.

Herman is survived by his loving wife, Carol Dyess Wetherington; his children, Joey, Chrissy, Chad, and Trevis Wetherington; his sisters, Brenda W. Johnson and Sherry W. Arthur; and his adored grandchildren, Aiden, Noah, Zac, and Iris Wetherington, along with a host of extended family members who will miss him dearly.

Herman's influence extended far beyond his immediate family. His dedication to the Carteret Community Theatre was evident as he was honored with the "Golden Hammer" award for his exceptional set designs. His community spirit shone through his active membership in the Jaycees and the Elks Club, as well as his role as a referee for the Seashore Soccer League.

Herman found solace and joy in nature. He was often found aboard his Boston Whaler or Carolina Skiff, headed to Shackleford or the Cape, a true testament of his love for the water. Whether he was fishing, stomping for clams, or simply enjoying the tranquility of the sound, his connection to the water was an integral part of his life which he shared with his family.

Herman's creativity was not limited to his professional work or his theatre contributions. He had a talent for working with wood, creating beautiful pieces that were both functional and artistic. His garden was a testament to his green thumb, and he took great pride in the vibrant life he cultivated there.

Herman’s presence will forever be felt like the gentle breeze on the water by his many families and friends who love him.
