Obituary Capt. Henry Eugene Hirschy, Jr., US Navy (ret) 82, of Beaufort, died Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at his home. A memorial service will be held at Brooks Funeral Home at 2pm, Sat April 11, 2015, with visitation following services. Hank Hirschy was born in Taunton, Massachusetts on June 13, 1932, to Henry Eugene and Jessie Dunn Hirschy. He graduated from Taunton High School, Cornell Universitys School of Hotel Administration and the Naval Postgraduate School. He accepted a commission in the United States Naval Reserve and served his country for 28 yrs in the US Navy, having joined in July 1951. He served during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War and retired as Captain after 28 years of service. His first assignment was officer-in-charge of the officers club in Sidi Yahia, French Morocco, after which Hank transferred to the Supply Corps of the Navy. Because of his educational background and excellent military record, Hank was sent to the White House early in the Kennedy Administration. He was assigned as the Supply Officer for the Naval Aide to the President and served as the Director of the Executive Dining Facilities, sometimes called the Navy Mess, in the White House. In addition to these duties, Hank was responsible for supply and logistic support including food, lodging and other personal services at Camp David and in the Presidential Yachts. During trips away from Washington he was responsible for the staffing and operation of the Presidents Quarters. This included the planning, preparing, and serving of state dinners. Hank went on to many other very challenging assignments in the Navy. Shortly after, he was selected for Captain in 1974, he was assigned as the Chief of the Vietnamese Navy Supply Support Branch, a job which he held when the North Vietnamese overran Saigon. He was the last US Navy Supply Corps Officer evacuated when Saigon fell on April 29, 1975. He completed his active duty in 1979 after serving as Commanding Officer of the Navy Food Service Systems command, responsible for all shipboard and shore stations dining facilities. Hank retired from the Adams-Burch company, a food service supply and equipment business in 1997 at which time he and his wife, Priscilla, moved from Alexandria, Virginia to beautiful Beaufort, North Carolina. They have enjoyed the wonderful people of Beaufort and the stunning coastal life for nearly 18yrs. He was a Mason and a proud Member of Beaufort Historical Association, and the Maritime Museum. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Priscilla Dudley Hirschy, their three children, Bradford Hirschy, and wife Stephanie, of Cary, NC, Susan Hirschy of Napa, California and Beth Royals, and husband, John of Richmond, Virginia, and four grandchildren, Isabelle and Emma Hirschy and Easton and Brendan Royals; and his Brother-in-law, Richard Coraine of Kittery, Maine. In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy Carey and Barbara Blow; and his sister-in-law Marion Dudley Coraine. The family will receive friends for one hour following the service.
