Obituary June Jeffries, 84, of Newport, died August 4, 2015, at Carteret HealthCare. A graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2015, at Gethsemane Memorial Park, with Rev. Tom Supplee, pastor of St. James United Methodist Church, officiating. June was born on August 28, 1930, in Taylor County, West Virginia to Clarence and Ethel Kerns McIntosh. She graduated from Grafton High School in 1949 and married Ben Treece in 1954. They traveled throughout the United States for the next twelve years as he pursued a career in the Air Force. In 1966, they moved to Newport when he began a second career in civil service. Her first husband died in 1998 and she married Jim Jeffries in 2003. They lived in Grafton, West Virginia for a short time, before returning to her home in Newport. She was a long-time member of St. James United Methodist Church in Newport. She was a faithful member of the Charity Fellowship Sunday School class and the United Methodist Women's Circle group, the Actionettes. She, along with two other UMW members, were the founding organizers of the St. James United Methodist Thrift Shop, which began in January 1984. In addition, in 1989, she helped organize and cook at the Wednesday Fellowship lunches that are still held at St. James. She loved to cook and also cooked meals for the Newport Rotary Club on Monday night, from 1990-2003. The phrase, "good and faithful servant", certainly applies to June's Christain life of service to her church and community. June was an avid seamstress who loved to sew, smock, quilt and applique. She loved sewing and smocking clothes for her granddaughter, Lauren, and in recent years, her two great-granddaughters, whom she always referred to as "Granny's Dollbabies". There are many a folk in Newport and in West Virginia who were recipients of a holiday apron sewn by "Miss" June. She is survived by her husband, James William Jeffries; daughter, Bena Jo Weires and her husband, Rick; son, Gary Dean Treece and his wife, Julie, all of Newport; brother, Paul McIntosh, of Cleveland, Ohio; 2 grandchildren, Lauren Mann Simmons and husband, Rusty, Waynesboro, Virginia; Matthew Briggs and wife, Jessie, Monroe, NC and 3 great-grandchildren, Charlotte Simmons, Mary Treece Simmons and Everett Briggs. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jeffries was preceded in death by her first husband, Ben Treece, brother, Rev. A. L McIntosh and her sister, Nellie Krise. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, August 7, 2015 at Brooks Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Junes memory should be made to St. James United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund or to St. James Meals on Wheels Program, P. O. Box 250, Newport, NC 28570.
