Heinz "Hank" Grohmann Jr., 81, of Newport, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2025 at his home.
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Heinz “Hank” Grohmann, Jr., a dedicated Veteran who served his country with unwavering courage and honor in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was born in Germany on June 15, 1943, and moved to Canada at the age of 9. During the Vietnam Draft, as a young man, he began the fight against the red tape to cross the border, eager to enlist in the United States Military. Hank enlisted in the USAF on July 25, 1963, at 20 years old. He proudly served in the Vietnam War, earning numerous honors and medals along the way. After retiring from the USAF at Pope AFB he became the Manager Assistant at the Pope AFB NCO Club, where he met the love of his life, Dee. He continued to serve his communities as a civilian employee for nearly 30 years. Him & Dee lived in NC, relocated to New Hampshire for 10 years, and returned to NC where he then retired from FRCE, Cherry Point in 2009. They built in the waterfront community of Sea Gate in the early 90s and that was “Home.” They also enjoyed many trips along the way, making memories in several countries.
He was a dedicated and hard-working man that was well travelled. He was a firmly honest, yet sensitive, beloved friend and family man. All of those that knew him looked forward to his excellent and intriguing story telling abilities, talking about things that truly mattered with full integrity. He leaves behind a legacy of true dedication to his Country, his family, and his friends. He is highly respected and will be dearly missed.
The following are just some of those that will greatly miss him. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Delores “Dee” Grohmann, two step/bonus children, Sheila Goodwin Griffin (Eddie) and James “Chris” Goodwin (Cherill), Brother, Helmer Grohmann (Helen) and very many beloved cousins (Grunhild), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces & nephews, great and great-great nieces & nephews, spanning many areas such as Canada, Florida, Alabama, Virginia, North Carolina, etc. Not to mention countless friends who will forever remember his selfless and honest spirit. He was preceded in death by his parents, Heinz & Alice Grohmann, his son Michael Grohmann, and his daughter Monica Grohmann Shirley. Also preceded in death by many beloved and dear family members.
