Harold "Sonny" O'Brien

Obituary Harold Franklin "Sonny" O'Brien of Greensboro and Salter Path/Indian Beach, joined his family in heaven on October 10, 2015. Sonny proudly served his country in the US Air Force as a Staff Sergeant Communications Officer from 1952 to 1956 during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of and served in multiple leadership positions of several civic organizations, including the VFW 2087, American Legion 53, Moose Lodge 589, Shriner's/Scottish Rite, and CWA 3607. Sonny retired from Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph after 43 years as a PBX Installer to enjoy golf, his breakfast "clubs" and time at his coastal home. Sonny was born and raised in Rockingham, NC on December 23, 1933, to James and Elizabeth O'Brien. He is preceded in death by them and his 3 older siblings, his beautiful, beloved sister, Dorothy, and his strong and protective brothers, Jim and Tom. Sonny graduated from Rockingham High School where he was an MVP quarterback of the football team and star basketball player. Sonny is survived by his wife of 54 years , Daris, his daughters, Ann and Karen O'Brien, his grandchildren, Kristopher Neil Lewis (his first), Kaylyn Grace Beverly (his princess), Andrew Franklin Beverly and MacKay O'Brien Beverly (his superstars), his beloved Aunt Bet, and numerous nephews, nieces (all his favorites) and cousins who loved him and were deeply loved and cherished by him. A memorial service was held at Brooks Funeral Home in Morehead City on Tuesday, October 13, 2015, at 2:00 pm. Another service will be held in Greensboro, NC at a future date and time yet to be determined.
