Gregg Garner

October 7, 1953 — June 28, 2016

Obituary Gregg Sherwood Garner, 62, of Newport, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at Pruitt Health in Sea Level. He was born on Oct. 7, 1953 to Lexie Harvey Jr. and Beulah Garner. He was raised in Newport Baptist Church and was happy to make Newport his lifelong home. Gregg was in the construction business for 36 years and he had a special talent for it. He was considered a master carpenter, evident in the artistry and precision in everything he built. Due to this reputation, he was much in demand and there are many, many houses and additions in this area that benefited from his expertise. In his younger days, Gregg enjoyed the beach, surfing, hunting and the camaraderie of friends at his hunting club. Even so, he loved animals, especially his cat "Kiki", and the many of animals he had through the years. He loved NASCAR and cooking on the grill, but was at his happiest in the North Carolina mountains, on his yearly trips there in the fall with his family. He was a good man, with a good heart, but most of all, he was a loving and caring father to his only child, Kristina Ruth Garner. As a result he will always be very special and most loved by her. She will cherish his memory and he will be greatly missed by all. He is survived by his daughter, Kristina Ruth Garner (Krissy); two young grandchildren, Hannah and Collin Garner, all of Newport; ex-wife and mother of his daughter, Cindy Ebert of Newport; two sisters, Debbie Price of Tampa, Fla. and Tami Wrobel and husband Mike of Newport; nephew, John Price; niece, Sabrina Wrobel; aunt, Mrs. Margaret Mauney; cousins, Milton Swain and Kathy Munden; longtime friend Mike, longtime friend IJ Hunter, and many acquaintances and friends in Carteret county; and special honorary family member, Mrs. Bessie Ward. He was preceded in death by his parents. A graveside service and memorial will be held Wednesday, July 6th at 11:00 a.m., at the Ameriah- Garner cemetery, with pastor Gary Carroll of the Newport Baptist Church presiding. This is located at 558 Nine Foot Road, Newport, NC. This is open to any that want to come and be in the presence of the parting of Gregg's soul. He would be happy to still be in his hometown. Memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, Duke Medical Center, 2200 W. Main Street, Suite A-200, Durham, NC 27705.
