Grayden Paul, Jr

Obituary Grayden Muir Paul Jr., 95, of Beaufort, died Wednesday, February 7, 2018, peacefully at his home. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at 12:00 Noon at Oceanview Cemetery, Beaufort, with Rev. Taylor Mills officiating. Grayden was born in Beaufort on October 11, 1922, to Grayden Muir and Mary Clark Wilhelm Paul. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Navy and served on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific during WWII. He graduated from NC State in 1947 with a degree in Engineering. He was then married to Barbara Abernathy. He worked as an Aeronautical Engineer for PanAm. They then moved to California where Mr. Paul worked for Lockheed as Marketing Director for 30 years. In 1989, retiring from Lockheed, Grayden and Bobbie returned to Beaufort, where he began his work volunteering in the county. Mr. Paul was very active in the Beaufort Historical Association (BHA), appointed to the Board of Governors in 1998; became Treasurer in 2000, and President in 2001. He chaired the Building Committee for the Courthouse Restoration in Beaufort in 1998 2000, and the John C. Manson House (2002 2004). These two preservations won national awards. Grayden was on the Board of Directors for the Beaufort 300th Birthday Celebration in 2009. He oversaw the restoration of the original Double Decker Bus for the BHA. He was also a member of the Friends for Fort Macon and served as President from 2002 2009. He served on the Board of Directors at the History Place in Morehead City and on the Board of the Friends of the N. C. Maritime Museum, where he was president for 6 of the 8 years he served. In November 2016, Mr. Paul received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, which honors North Carolinians for their significant contributions to their communities and to the state through their exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments. He is survived by his son, Grayden M. Paul, III, and his wife, Sherri Hays Paul, of Beaufort; granddaughter, Ami Paul Doss, and husband, Charlie Brown Doss; and sister, Mary Frazier Paul. The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 5:00 until 7:00. In addition to his parents, Mr. Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Abernathy Paul and a brother, Harry Allan Paul.
