Obituary Gerald D. Jones, 75, of Morehead City died Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at Carteret General Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 22, at Reece's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Mill Creek, with Pastor James Chadwick officiating. Mr. Jones was born in Morehead City, to Elizabeth Horne and Almond Roy Jones. He faithfully served his country in the United States Coast Guard. After his military service, he attended Chowan College. For many years Gerald worked as the Environmental Health Specialist for Carteret County. As a young man Gerald enjoyed shagging the night away at the Pavilion on Atlantic Beach. He loved the game of football and played halfback for the Morehead City Eagles and Chowan College Hawks. He was voted "Most Outstanding" after he and the Eagles went undefeated and won the 1958 State Championship. Gerald loved the water and he was an avid fisherman who enjoyed sharing his love of the water with his children and grandchildren. In recent years he has enjoyed Tuesday mornings at McDonald's rekindling old friendships at the weekly breakfast. He also enjoyed a rich faith and relationship with God, most recently at Reece's Chapel in Mill Creek. He truly loved his church dinners and Sunday school. Gerald was fortunate to enjoy many happy days in Salter Path and Mill Creek where he was frequently visited by his life long friends and family. Gerald is survived by a son, Gerald "Chris" Jones, and wife, Thelma; a daughter, Jennifer Fernandez, and husband, Charlie, of Charlotte; a sister, Alice Faye Clayburn, of Morehead City; four grandchildren, Cade and Jasa Jones of Mill Creek, Trace and Elizabeth Fernandez of Charlotte; and one great-grandchild, Michelle Jones of Mill Creek. He will also be missed by his grandkids of the heart: Keith, Zach and Mason McGavock. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents and brother, George Roy Jones. Family will be receiving friends at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum, P. O.
